The 6th Sunday of Easter is Rogation Sunday. The name comes from the Latin meaning “to ask.” From ancient times, our ancestors paused before the Ascension (this coming Thursday, the 40th Day of Easter) to ask God for the success of crops being planted. In current times we add two further prayers: “For Commerce & Industry” and “For Stewardship of Creation.”

The 5th Sunday of Easter directs our attention ahead urging us to prepare for the culmination of the Easter Season on Pentecost (the 50th Day of Easter; this year, May 27th). In the Gospel reading today Jesus says: “The one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these because I am going to the Father.”

To whom are we to turn when we lack direction in our lives, or when sorrow or isolation weigh on us? On Easter Day we celebrated God’s vindication of Jesus, and the life that is given through him. On this 4th Sunday of Easter we hear about that same Jesus who is our Good shepherd. Jesus says: “My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they know me.” (John 10:27)
